Bolted-Bonnet OS&Y Gate Valve
A configuration route for industrial isolation with an external yoke and rising stem. Review the complete valve specification, bonnet arrangement and open height before comparing offers.
Review API 600 requirementsA rising stem gate valve can match your pipeline specification and still create an installation problem if the open height is overlooked. Space above the handwheel, access to exposed threads and maintenance clearance all affect the purchase. Define those requirements together with the isolation duty before comparing quotations. You can then select a configuration that fits the line and makes inspection and operation practical.
Pioneer Valve supports industrial procurement teams, equipment builders and EPC projects with gate valve configuration reviews and quotations. Share your data sheet and available installation envelope to confirm the proposed construction and supply scope.

Choose a construction route, then define the actual size, rating, materials and operator. These routes overlap: one valve may be stainless steel, wedge type and OS&Y. They are not three mutually exclusive product designs. Availability and specification conformity require confirmation in the project quotation.

Review API 600 requirementsSpecify stainless construction alongside the required stem arrangement. Confirm wetted grades, trim, packing and corrosion suitability for your fluid and cleaning conditions.
Explore stainless steel optionsCombine the required stem motion with an identified wedge construction. Confirm solid or flexible geometry in the quotation; neither is established by the external stem alone.
Review wedge configurationsAlready have a specified model? Send the tag, drawing or purchase specification for a like-for-like review. Do not replace an existing valve using nominal size and the phrase rising stem alone.
The stem moves axially as the gate changes position. In a common OS&Y arrangement, the operating threads are outside the pressure-containing body and supported by a yoke. The exact operating mechanism must be confirmed for the offered design.
The gate moves into or out of the flow passage to provide isolation. A conventional gate valve is normally used fully open or fully closed, not as a routine throttling device. A visible extended stem can help your team recognize travel, but it cannot establish seat condition, leakage performance or isolation safety.
Body material, wedge geometry, bonnet construction and stem arrangement are separate selection dimensions. For the design comparison rather than the product inquiry, read our rising vs non-rising stem gate valve guide.
Give each quotation the same technical basis. Missing requirements often reappear later as drawing changes, inspection exclusions or an installation mismatch.
| Selection item | State in your inquiry | Confirm before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Service duty | Fluid, operating and design pressure/temperature, shutoff differential and cycling | Suitability of the proposed valve and operating mechanism |
| Stem and operator | Rising stem; OS&Y if required; manual or specified operating arrangement | Actual stem/handwheel motion, interface and operating access |
| Materials | Body, bonnet, trim, stem, packing and gasket requirements | Exact grades and any substitutions, not just steel or stainless |
| Connections | Pipe size, flange standard/rating, face and face-to-face dimensions | Mating pipe compatibility, bolting and replacement dimensions |
| Installation envelope | Available overhead and side clearance; orientation and obstructions | Open and closed dimensions, covers, supports and maintenance access |
| Testing and records | Applicable product/test standards, acceptance criteria and documentation | Agreed inspection scope, witness points, records and deviations |
Where API 600 is specified, identify the applicable edition and required construction and evidence. Rising stem is not proof of API compliance, licensing, a particular pressure class or a universal leakage level.
If the envelope is restricted, ask for an engineering review before changing construction. A non-rising stem can have different space requirements, but that does not automatically make it suitable for the process, maintenance practice or project specification.
Purchasing recommendation: attach the approved open-height drawing to the purchase order. Treat dimensional deviations as an approval item, not a detail to resolve after delivery.
Review the proposed body and trim against the specified pressure-temperature conditions, fluid and isolation duty. Include temperature changes and reopening requirements where relevant. Do not derive the allowable operating envelope from the stem arrangement.
Identify the required body, bonnet and wetted grades. Supply fluid chemistry, temperature and cleaning conditions for review. Stainless construction does not remove the need to assess compatibility, packing, gasket materials or the external operating environment.
Exposed threads need appropriate inspection and lubrication under the valve instructions. Dust, moisture, washdown and restricted access can affect the maintenance plan. If a cover or special protection is required, include it in the inquiry and confirm its dimensions and maintenance access.

Pioneer Valve helps turn your isolation requirement into a defined gate valve inquiry. Our project quotation should identify the proposed configuration and supply responsibilities so your technical and purchasing teams can review the same scope.
Review the requested stem construction, materials, ends and service information against the proposed supply.
Confirm the drawing and dimensional approval requirements, particularly open height and replacement interfaces.
Agree applicable tests, acceptance criteria and documentation before the order is released.
Confirm quantity, packing, delivery terms and any exclusions in the project quotation.
Specific sizes, materials, operating packages, certificates and delivery dates are subject to the written offer. Category descriptions are not a substitute for an approved project data sheet.
A lower price is only useful when both offers meet the same requirement. Ask each supplier to identify deviations rather than leaving your team to infer them from a brief product description.
For a replacement valve, provide the existing nameplate, installed dimensions and service history. Record any operating difficulty or access constraint. This helps prevent a dimensionally similar valve from repeating the same maintenance problem.
For operation beyond a handwheel, include the required opening/closing duty and available supply conditions. Operator selection requires valve-specific loads and interface details; it cannot be completed from nominal valve size alone.
A rising stem gate valve has a stem that moves outward as the gate opens and returns as it closes. This movement provides an external indication of travel. It does not, by itself, identify the body material, wedge construction, bonnet or pressure rating. Specify these separately and use the approved drawing to check the complete installation envelope.
Rising stem describes stem movement, while outside screw and yoke describes the location and arrangement of the operating threads and supporting yoke. Many industrial gate valves combine these features, but the terms should not replace a construction drawing. Confirm thread location, stem motion, handwheel motion and operator interface when reviewing an offered valve or matching an existing installation.
Use the offered general arrangement drawing, including the fully open height and any operator or protective stem cover. Do not calculate the required space from nominal pipe size alone. Allow additional access for operation, lubrication, inspection and maintenance removal. Give the supplier your available envelope before ordering, especially beneath platforms, insulation, cable trays or other fixed obstructions.
No. Stem travel is an indication of mechanical position, not a measurement of seat leakage or proof of safe process isolation. Define the required leakage acceptance and test conditions in the purchase specification. For maintenance isolation, follow the site isolation procedure and required verification measures rather than relying solely on the visible stem or an operator position indicator.
A stainless steel body and a rising stem arrangement describe different aspects of the valve and can be specified together. Confirm the offered construction and exact grades for the body, bonnet, stem, seats and other wetted components. Provide fluid chemistry, temperature, pressure and cleaning conditions so material selection is reviewed for your application rather than inferred from the category name.
Do not assume any stem orientation is acceptable for every valve. Provide the intended pipe and stem orientation, valve size, operator weight and available supports. Ask the supplier to confirm installation limitations for the offered design, including packing access and maintenance. The installation instructions and approved arrangement should govern the final layout rather than a generic product photograph or category description.
No. Stem movement does not change the basic duty of a conventional gate valve, which is normally fully open or fully closed isolation. Sustained partial opening can create unfavorable flow, vibration and erosion at internal surfaces. If you need continuous regulation, supply the flow range and pressure drop for a separate control valve review instead of selecting by stem arrangement alone.
Send nominal size, connection details, fluid, design and operating pressure and temperature, shutoff differential, materials and quantity. State rising stem construction, the required standard, operator and available open height. Include inspection, leakage acceptance and documentation requirements. For replacements, attach photographs, tag data and dimensions so the quotation can identify inclusions, exclusions and deviations before purchase approval.
Select a rising stem gate valve as a complete isolation package, not simply a visible-stem feature. Align materials and operating duty with the required open height, maintenance access and acceptance criteria. Send Pioneer Valve your specification and installation dimensions to review a suitable configuration, clarify deviations and obtain a project quotation before you commit to procurement.
