Turn a Standard Reference into an Orderable Valve
Two quotations can both say “API 600 gate valve” yet differ in body material, trim, wedge, end preparation, operator and inspection scope. Those differences affect compatibility, maintenance and total project risk. Before you compare price, convert the standard reference into a complete valve description that matches the piping class, process conditions and documents your project actually requires.
An API 600 gate valve is a steel gate valve within the standard's flanged-end or butt-welding-end, bolted-bonnet scope. The designation does not specify one pressure class, alloy, trim or leakage result. These choices still belong in your data sheet and purchase order.

Pioneer Valve can review API 600 gate valve inquiries for process isolation duties. Send the complete service and specification rather than only a nominal size. For the wider product family, visit our industrial gate valve range.
Request an API 600 Gate Valve QuoteWhat API 600 Defines, and What You Must Define
The API standards catalog identifies API 600 as the standard for steel gate valves with flanged and butt-welding ends and bolted bonnets. That scope helps establish the valve family. It does not replace the engineering inputs needed to configure a valve for one line.
| Specification layer | What it establishes | What your inquiry should state |
|---|---|---|
| API 600 | Product-standard framework for the relevant steel gate valve construction. | Required edition, permitted options and any project exceptions. |
| ASME B16.34 | General valve requirements including pressure-temperature ratings, materials, testing and marking. | Pressure class, body material and design pressure-temperature envelope. |
| End and dimensional standards | Flange interface, face-to-face or butt-weld end details where invoked. | Flange standard and facing, or weld-end bore and preparation. |
| Inspection and testing | Baseline and supplementary examination or pressure-test requirements. | Applicable test standard, acceptance, witness points and documents. |
| Project data sheet | The application-specific valve configuration. | Fluid, trim, wedge, operator, corrosion controls and accessories. |
The current ASME B16.34 overview covers pressure-temperature ratings, dimensions, tolerances, materials, nondestructive examination, testing and marking for several valve constructions. Use the editions named in your project specification; do not silently substitute a newer or older edition during quotation.
Build the Technical Description in the Right Order
1. Service and pressure-temperature envelope
Start with the process fluid, design and operating pressure, minimum and maximum temperature, shutoff differential and required flow direction. Pressure class alone is incomplete because allowable pressure depends on material and temperature. Identify thermal cycling, solids, corrosion, erosion, sour service and external fire exposure where they affect material or test requirements.
2. Size and end connection
State nominal size and whether the valve needs flanged or butt-welding ends. For flanged valves, define the governing flange standard, facing and any surface-finish requirement. For butt-weld ends, provide pipe schedule, bore and weld preparation. Face-to-face or end-to-end dimensions should align with the project standard and existing piping where interchangeability matters.
3. Shell material, trim and bolting
Common project specifications may call for carbon, low-temperature, alloy or stainless steel shell materials, but API 600 is not a material grade. Select the shell from corrosion, temperature, piping compatibility and code requirements. Then define trim: stem, wedge and seating surfaces can require different alloys or hard-facing. Include bonnet bolting, gasket and packing requirements rather than accepting an unspecified “standard trim.”
Wedge, Seats, Stem and Bonnet
A solid or flexible wedge may be considered depending on the service and project specification. Flexible wedges can accommodate limited seat alignment and thermal effects, while the complete design still needs review for operating temperature, cycling and trapped-fluid concerns. The choice should follow the duty, not a blanket preference.
API 600 valves are associated with a bolted bonnet and an outside-screw-and-yoke arrangement. The rising stem provides visible position indication and keeps the operating threads outside the process fluid, but it also needs vertical clearance. Check access for packing adjustment, bonnet removal and actuator maintenance before fixing the piping layout.
Seat construction and trim selection determine how the valve addresses wear, corrosion and shutoff. Do not translate “metal seated” into a promise of zero leakage. State the required test standard, fluid, pressure, duration, direction and acceptance criterion. For an explanation of wedge behavior, see wedge vs parallel-slide gate valves.
Manual, Gear or Powered Operation
Handwheel operation may suit smaller valves and accessible locations. Larger size, higher differential pressure or frequent operation can require a gearbox. Remote service may call for electric, pneumatic or hydraulic actuation. The operator must be selected from required thrust or torque, maximum differential pressure, orientation, stroke time, duty cycle and available power.
Do not size an actuator from nominal valve size alone. Define whether closing against full differential is required and whether emergency operation, local hand override, limit switches or position feedback are needed. Include environmental protection, hazardous-area classification and control voltage where relevant. Our gate valve actuator guide explains these selection inputs.
Inspection, Testing and Documentation
Define the pressure-test standard and acceptance criteria in the inquiry. Separate shell integrity testing from seat leakage testing, and state whether tests require purchaser or third-party witnessing. If your project needs positive material identification, supplementary NDE, hardness limits, impact testing, fugitive-emission qualification, fire-test evidence or sour-service controls, list each requirement and its governing document.
A material certificate does not prove every supplementary test, and an API 600 reference does not automatically establish API Monogram licensing. If Monogram equipment is mandatory, ask for the manufacturer's current API license and verify that the product falls within its scope. Keep design compliance, inspection records and certification claims separate in the commercial review.
Agree the document package before ordering: drawings, data sheets, material certificates, pressure-test reports, NDE or PMI reports, coating records, packing data and operating instructions as applicable. Late document requests often affect price and delivery because they may require hold points during manufacture.
When an API 600 Gate Valve Fits the Duty
| Application question | Selection guidance |
|---|---|
| Is the duty isolation? | A suitable gate valve operates fully open or fully closed; use a control valve for routine throttling. |
| Does the piping class call for API 600? | Follow the project standard rather than substituting API 602, API 603 or API 6D from similarity alone. |
| Are flanged or butt-weld ends required? | Define the exact interface and dimensions needed for new construction or replacement. |
| Can the layout accept a rising stem? | Allow headroom, operating access and removal space for the bonnet and operator. |
| Is the medium suitable for a wedge gate? | Review solids, deposits, corrosion, erosion and trapped-fluid conditions before selection. |
Typical project contexts include refinery and petrochemical process lines, oil and gas facilities, power and industrial utility systems where the piping specification calls for this construction. The standard name does not prove suitability for a particular hazardous fluid or operating cycle. Use our gate valve selection guide when the basic valve type is still undecided.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does API 600 cover for a gate valve?
API 600 covers steel gate valves with flanged or butt-welding ends and bolted bonnets. It establishes a product-standard framework for design, materials, trim, dimensions, operation, inspection and related requirements. It does not turn every valve into one fixed configuration. Your purchase order still needs to define size, class, ends, shell material, trim and project-specific additions.
Is every cast steel gate valve an API 600 gate valve?
No. Cast steel describes the body manufacturing route and material family, while API 600 is a product standard with broader design and verification requirements. A valve should not be represented as API 600 merely because it has a cast steel body, rising stem or bolted bonnet. Ask the supplier to identify the governing standard and provide the agreed inspection documents.
What is the difference between API 600 and API 602 gate valves?
They serve different product envelopes. API 600 addresses steel gate valves with flanged or butt-welding ends and bolted bonnets, commonly used on larger process lines. API 602 covers compact steel gate, globe and check valves in smaller sizes and permits several end and bonnet arrangements. Follow the piping class and required product standard instead of treating one as universally better.
Does API 600 compliance mean the valve is API Monogram licensed?
No. Manufacturing a valve to requirements identified in API 600 and holding an API Monogram license are different claims. If the project requires monogrammed equipment, state that explicitly and verify the supplier's current license and approved scope through API records. Do not assume a standards reference on a quotation, drawing or nameplate proves Monogram Program authorization.
Which details are still required after specifying API 600?
Specify nominal size, pressure class, flanged or butt-weld ends, facing or weld preparation, body material, trim, wedge design and operator. Add process fluid, design pressure and temperature, shutoff differential, corrosion requirements and installation orientation. Define inspection, testing, documentation, NDE, PMI, fugitive-emission or sour-service requirements where applicable. The standard name is the beginning of the order description.
Can an API 600 gate valve be used for throttling?
A conventional wedge gate valve is intended for full-open or full-closed isolation, not routine throttling. Holding the wedge partly open can expose seating and guide surfaces to high-velocity flow, vibration and erosion. If the process needs regulation, use a valve designed for control duty. Tell the supplier about any expected partial-stroke operation rather than assuming the API designation changes this limitation.
Final Thoughts
API 600 identifies the gate valve family, but a reliable order still depends on service, class, materials, trim, ends, operation and inspection scope. Define those items before comparing suppliers, and separate standards compliance from certification claims. Pioneer Valve can review your technical data sheet and project requirements.
