Carbon Steel Gate Valve FAQ
What is a carbon steel gate valve?
A carbon steel gate valve uses a carbon steel pressure body and a gate that moves across the flow passage for isolation. The description does not define every wetted component. Specify the body and bonnet grades separately from the stem, seating surfaces, packing and gasket, then check the complete assembly against your fluid and operating conditions.
Is WCB the same material as A105?
No. WCB is a cast carbon steel grade covered by ASTM A216/A216M, while ASTM A105/A105M addresses carbon steel forgings for piping applications. They represent different material specifications and product forms. If your piping class specifies one, an alternative needs technical review and approval rather than a substitution based only on the general carbon steel description.
Does a WCB body mean the trim is also carbon steel?
No. Body material and trim material are separate selections. A WCB gate valve may use different materials for its stem and seating surfaces, depending on the offered design. Request a component material schedule and define any required trim designation. Check what that designation covers instead of assuming that it specifies every internal component, seal or hardfacing detail.
Can carbon steel gate valves be used for steam?
They may be considered for steam isolation when the complete design is suitable for the specified conditions. State operating and design pressure, maximum temperature, startup conditions and shutoff differential. Review the pressure-temperature rating, body grade, bolting, packing, gasket and seats together. A material name or an ambient pressure test alone does not establish suitability for your steam line.
Is a carbon steel gate valve suitable for corrosive liquids?
Compatibility depends on the liquid composition, concentration, temperature, contaminants and expected exposure. An external paint system does not protect the internal flow passage. Give the supplier your process data and corrosion requirements before choosing the body and trim. Where carbon steel is unsuitable, evaluate stainless steel or another material against the actual service rather than relying on a general corrosion-resistant label.
Can a carbon steel gate valve regulate flow?
A conventional gate valve is normally selected for fully open or fully closed isolation. Leaving it partly open for continuous regulation can expose internal surfaces to unfavorable flow, vibration and erosion. If your process requires throttling, provide the flow range and pressure drop for a separate valve selection. Choosing carbon steel does not change the operating purpose of the gate design.
Which documents should I request with a quotation?
Define the required data sheet, general arrangement drawing, component material list, material records and pressure or leakage test reports. Add any inspection attendance, traceability, coating or packing requirements before purchase. Ask the supplier to identify which documents are included, when approval is required and which items cost extra. This gives purchasing and engineering a common basis for comparing offers.
What information is needed to price carbon steel gate valves?
Send size, quantity, connection details, specified material grade, fluid and operating and design conditions. Include shutoff differential, construction standard, trim, operator, inspection scope and required delivery terms. For replacements, attach nameplate photographs and installed dimensions. A written offer should identify the proposed configuration and deviations so you can compare equivalent scopes rather than only the unit price.
